Library Mission

The mission of the Westmont Public Library is to help people achieve their full potential by being a leading resource for information, education, culture and recreation.

 

Library History

1927  Everett Lincoln Meservey started collecting books for the library  

 

1932   Funds were received by the WPA to expand the library. Mrs. Velma Evans became the first part-time librarian.

 

1945  

The Village voted to support the library with tax revenues.

 

1963    The American Legion Post 338 donated land for the Westmont Public Library.

 

1964   The new library opened with Mrs. Dwight Townsend as librarian

 

1973      The Francis S. Maier Children's Wing was added.

 

1982          Expansion and remodeling completed.

 

1989-1990         Bond issue referendum passed 1334 to 935 for the new library building on November 7, 1989. Ground-breaking ceremonies were held on July 29, 1990.

 

1993  The new 28,000 square foot building opened in January. The dedication was held on April 18, 1993.

 

1993-2000 The Library Board was successful in achieving a $550,000 settlement on construction problems.

 

2005 Paid of the mortgage.

Reopened on Sundays.

 

2006  Retired Building Bonds.

Passed referendum increasing operating budget.  

2008  Newly refurbished Childrens & Youth Department opens.
